New Blog!

Hi All,

I have started a second blog, called "the encouragement lounge." This blog is for graduate students and other adult students. I offer a mix of strategies for dealing with the demands of balancing family, work, school, friends and so on. I also post YouTube videos and photos intended to offer a moment of fun or respite from all of the work.

Check it out:

movin' on up!

Last year's fall 08 cohort is just beginning internship! What an exciting time. I am advising about half of these students. I am also working with my colleague Kathleen Berg who is advising the other half of this intern class. We all work together in class. Last week we heard from all students regarding their internship plans. What a wonderful evening -- some students are so clearly building on their current work but on a broader scale and with significantly more knowledge gained from a year and a half in the program. Others are using the internship to explore new career opportunities and/or areas of research interest. The journey continues...

until next time,
Harriet

Winter 09 cohort finishes first class!

Hi All,

Above see some members of the winter 09 cohort (not all members of the cohort are pictured) along with a few students from other programs who took Leadership and Ethics as an elective.

Last week, students made their final presentations and handed in final papers. This last class meeting had a particularly memorable energy. Students shared ideas from the course which were most important to them, as well as things they had learned about themselves through the deep reflection required in this course. As students talked, their classmates were strongly supportive and encouraging. I can't really capture it here, but it was a wonderfully supportive and collaborative energy. These students have really started to get to know each other and my sense is they care about each other, and each other's growth and success.

This week is spring break and the week after, CAP IV begins.

Until next time,
Harriet

Internship planning -- a true adrenaline rush!

Hi All,

I am printing this photo with Lauren Steck's permission. Lauren sent me this after revising her internship proposal. She had been working hard, going back through books and papers from the program. When she finished the revision she saw that her office had the look of someone who had worked hard, and sent me the photo!

I am currently collaborating with students who are planning their internships. I find it quite exciting to watch as students pull together the aspects of the program that have most touched them, most informed their leadership practice, and most shaped their future career goals. Good stuff indeed.

More soon
