Let's Do Different!

Future Leaders of Change,
Every week we attend class, we learn of the importance of leadership of all ranks, embracing change and chaos, and developing authentic communication and relationships. Through this time we have discovered what matters, and as a cohort committed to change and leadership, my friends it's time to lead--- together, as the students of PRL. In a time of constant change, with news of layoffs, lack of medical services, and stories of hunger, it's time for us to get involved. With our everyday chaos of families, jobs, and our other commitments to volunteerism---it may be seemingly hard to give more than we are already contributing, but I ask for your help even in the smallest way possible. Just as leadership can emerge from the ranks of nobility or a middle class working single mother of two, it too can arise from Carlow's Professional Leadership Department as we join together to create the change that our lives are so passionately dedicated too . As Pearce says, “we are not simply being asked to "do better" than our predecessors, we are being asked to "do different"”. PRL, let's do different. Let's do different than those before us, and stir up some movement together.
I invite you to join and help this holiday season....
Dr. Vincent Albo, a Pittsburgh oncologist-hematologist, recognized the need for a home away from home for families of sick children being treated in Pittsburgh hospitals. Thus the Ronald McDonald Carehouse was created, providing lodging for those families for an affordable price in hard situations.
Together as the PRL at Carlow University, I invite you to help donate any of these items on the Ronald McDonald (Shadyside house pictured above) wish list:

Please drop items in the collection box in the first floor lobby of CLAM.
Thank you for your time , and happy holidays to you and your families.
Let's do different.

Student stories: Cindy

If I were to be completely honest I would have to admit that when I enrolled in the Professional Leadership program I was unsure of the value these courses would add to my current career. Armed with only a bachelor’s degree, I have been extremely fortunate to have spent almost four years already serving in a leadership role as the Director of Development for a large nonprofit. Most peers in my field have already earned a masters degree, so I knew that if I were to ever move to a larger agency or achieve my goal of becoming an executive director, I would have to put in my time and earn a masters degree. I am pleased to report that what I originally thought would be just “busy work” has turned into valuable learning opportunities. With one class completed and the second under way, I have found great value in my course work. Each week the readings, assignments and class discussion have encouraged me to approach my role as a leader from a different perspective. Where I may have always used the same tool to address an issue I now have an entire tool belt of resources from which to draw. Perhaps most importantly, for three hours each week I can put aside my role as wife, mother and boss to completely focus on my own interests and personal development. In a few short months not only have I learned how to be a better leader, but I have gained a sense of confidence and self assurance that I did not possess prior to being a part of this program.
